I don’t quite remember when I stumbled across the #bglsr tag, or how.
I follow a lot of handles on twitter, so it may have been one of
those. I have been on twitter for several years now, but I have never
used it for more than a couple of weeks at a stretch. Whenever I am on
twitter for a week or so, I follow a few handles, and then forget
about twitter for months on end. Then I come back and then follow a
few more, so I have hundreds of handles that I follow. So to say, I
won’t miss a twitter drama or a hashtag if I stayed for a week, with
such a rich timeline. And that is how I came across the bglsr hashtag.
On a parallel universe, Sometime in May-June last year (2012), I
realized that I had become Fat and Slow, and wouldn’t be long before
all the excess fat that I was storing would bite me on my ass, or
worse, my heart.
And I joined a Gym on impulse. The first week was a disaster. I
couldn’t run on the treadmill. I had to walk. I couldn’t do a single
push-up. The day I did circuit training on the machines, I felt like I
went through a giant washing machine.
I weigh 95 KGs. Later, I joined a more convenient Gym in the same
month, because I knew I couldn’t quit. I chose a Gym nearer to my
office so that I never have to miss. I did an Inbody scan, and it
showed about 35 KGs of body fat.
I still couldn’t run, because I was too heavy and my legs too weak.
But somehow I got possessed by fitness. Fitness consumed me. I read
tons of literature, went through pages and pages of bullshit and bro
science. Watched thousands of Youtube videos, befriended professional
body builders on Youtube. Called up old friends who pay professional
I learnt the basics. And started from there. I was told that I should
run faster than yesterday, lift heaver than yesterday, and my
yesterday-self was my only competition. And I took it to my heart.
I walked a bit faster everyday. I walked on incline. I cycled a fit
faster everyday. The increased the resistance every few days. I
started lifting weights. I will talk about my strength training
And I discovered the BGLSR tag. Somehow this tag had taken to me. I
had never been on twitter this long at a stretch before. It used to
bore me in 1 week, and I would never login for months on end. I didn’t
even know when the last BGLSR happened. But, it was sheer luck that I
discovered it just when I was consuming myself with health literature,
nutrition and training, and ways to motivate myself. I have not been
off twitter for long since I started working out.. And I have always
been tagging it for months now. And while I update my progress and my
workout, I was also getting fitter every day.
By September, I could run 8 KMs. I could so 25 Push-ups at a go. And I
followed my diet like a weirdo. Oats and skim milk for breakfast.
Boiled chicken for lunch, Boiled veggies for dinner. Lots of egg
By september 2012, My body weight was 85 KG, have gained 3+ kgs of
muscle and have lost 14 KGs of Fat.
Life couldn’t be better. I am now stronger, faster and healthier.
I posted my progress on #bglsr around that time.
Weight loss is not that difficult. There is only one way to it. Eat
lesser than you need. That’s it. It is called a calorie deficit and
you should be on a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight. Get
back to eating normal portions when you have reached your goals, but
never over eat unless you are looking to gain weight.
Right now, I started a calorie surplus diet again, because I started a
strength training program and am looking to gain about 5-6 KG of
muscles when I can. I am lifting as heavy as I can (5 rep range). I am
I can’t believe that I just renewed by Gym membership for a whole
year. I had completed my 6 month membership without a single long
break, except for one week when I had to travel long. And I plan to
workout for a long time. And I want to get better everyday. Long way
to go.. But now I know that I am on the right track..
Right now I stopped fat loss as I started on a calorie surplus again,
and have gained back some weight. I just eat more eggs, more chicken
and more Veggies, though. All clean. I cook all my food in Extra
Virgin Olive Oil (I cook it below smoke point).
My last push-ups were with 45 KGs on the back (20+25 KG plates) for 8
Reps. I can do 20 Reps with 25 KG plates. I am not bragging, but this
is just to show that I have come far from the time when I had to do
push-ups from the knees as I couldn’t do a single push-up..
I do weighted Planks with 25 KG plates.
I only do Barbell full squats (Thighs below the knee).
I dead lift once and twice a week (alternately)
And No I was never this fit my entire Life. Even as a Teenager.
All I did was try to beat my last workout by a little bit. One more
rep, one more lap, one more KG.
